The 2017 European GNSS Agency (GSA) market report estimated 5.8 billion satellite positioning capable devices in use worldwide with an expected 8 billion devices by 2020. That’s an average of about one positioning device per person on the planet!

Although I’m not sure about how many vehicles use the positioning satellites at a given time, the 2017 GSA report states that 380 million devices are used for positioning vehicles on roads.

Guess what market has the highest number of positioning satellite users? Smartphones! According to the same report, 5.4 billion satellite-positioning capable smartphones were in use in 2017. That’s 80% of all satellite-positioning enabled devices worldwide!
