The PhD decision depends on the person and what they want to do for work. For an engineer without a PhD, I would expect to solve problems using existing knowledge. With a PhD, I come up with new ways to solve the problems. Think of it this way, “do you want to USE the textbook, or do you want to WRITE part of the textbook?”.

Engineers without a PhD can have a very fulfilling career! New problems will keep you busy until you retire. Keep in mind, the PhD will give you a deeper understanding and new ways to solve these problems.
